When I lived in Neustadt a. d. Weinstrasse, Germany I was part of a public preschool PTA. We wanted to come up with a way to support the teachers to integrate gardening into their program. The site had limited access to soil and sunlight so we decided to build raised vegetable beds that could be placed on pavement.
Inspired by large urban gardening initiatives like Princessinnengarten in Berlin I came up with a design concept for the beds that would be flexible and easily movable. I created the plans for the build and calculated the materials and cost. After fundraising we planned a volunteer building event. With a small group of parents and the kids running around we constructed 3 raised beds and prepared them for planting.
The teachers raised veggie starts from seeds with the preschoolers and later transferred them to the beds where they continued to grow successfully.
